In general, there are three main grades as follows: - “40/50” due to its medium air blowing and penetration, is used in tropical areas. - “60/70” due to its medium air blowing and penetration, is used in mild areas. - “80/100” due to its relatively low air blowing and penetration, is used in cold areas. Application: - Road: 90 percent of the bitumen is used in the construction and maintenance of roads - Roofing: 10 percent of the bitumen is used in the roofing and other (canals and tunnels, pipe coating) TEST TEST METHOD (ASTM) 40/50 60/70 85/100 MIN MAX MIN MAX MIN MAX Penetration at 25˚C, 100g,5s-(0.1mm) D5 40 50 60 70 85 100 Flash point – (˚C) D92 250 --- 250 --- 232 --- Ductility at 25˚C,5cm/min – (cm) D113 100 --- 100 --- 100 --- Solubility – (%) D2042 99.0 --- 99.0 --- 99.9 --- Retained Penetration after T.F.O.T – (%) D5 55 --- 52 --- 47 --- Ductility at 25˚C,5cm/min after T.F.O.T – (cm) D113 --- --- 50 --- 75 --- Density-(Kg/m3) D71, D3289 1010 1060 1010 1060 1000 1050 Softening point – (˚C) D36 52 60 42 56 45 52 Change of weight after heating – (%) D6 --- 0.2 --- 0.2 --- 0.5 Penetration drop after heating – (%) D5 --- 20 --- 20 --- 20 Bitumen content –(%) D4 99.5 --- 99.5 --- 99.5 --- Spot test AASHOT 102 Neg.
